Helping the Blind to cope.

This is a picture of my Mother Frances Ada Capell who is now in her 100th year. My Mother recently lost the little vision she had left so I had to do something to allow her to be able to still travel from room to room in the house. To accomplish this I fabricated an oak railing through the inside of the house to allow her to go to the four areas she frequents. She is now able to travel from her seat in the living room to her place at the kitchen table and on into her bedroom and to her washroom area.

Rail kitchen to bed.

This picture shows the rail going through the kitchen and on into the bedroom. It was necessary to split the rail in the door area and devise a lock and unlock devise to enable access to the closet which is behind the door but it was accomplished and works well. You will also view in the next picture where I installed a washroom right opposite her bed in place of a closet which was in that location previously.

Bed to washroom

The railing stops at the washroom where there is a photo cell bathroom light actuator which times out and goes out after a predetermined duration of time. This light comes on as soon as she raises her head from the pillow. Although she is unable to distinguish things or people she is still able to tell if the light is on. You will also notice the clock I rigged up for her which is set at her eye level and with a touch actuated bright light.

She's mobile again

She gave up her previous mode of transportation and now simply follows the rail.

Mom's friend

This very loyal German Shepherd never leaves her side. Day and night she is right there on the job.
