Helping the Blind to cope.

Blind rail from living room.jpg

This is a picture of my Mother Frances Ada Capell who is now in her 100 & first year. My Mother recently lost the little vision she had left so I had to do something to allow her to be able to still travel from room to room in the house. To accomplish this I fabricated an oak railing through the inside of the house to allow her to go to the four areas she frequents. She is now able to travel from her seat in the living room to her place at the kitchen table and on into her bedroom and to her washroom area.

This picture shows the rail going through the kitchen and on into the bedroom. It was necessary to split the rail in the door area and devise a lock and unlock devise to enable access to the closet which is behind the door but it was accomplished and works well. You will also view in the next picture where I installed a washroom right opposite her bed in place of a closet which was in that location previously.

The railing stops at the washroom where there is a photo cell bathroom light actuator which times out and goes out after a predetermined duration of time. This light comes on as soon as she raises her head from the pillow. Although she is unable to distinguish things or people she is still able to tell if the light is on. You will also notice the clock I rigged up for her which is set at her eye level and with a touch actuated bright light.

I built a new set of railings for the house at 66 Parkview Road in St.Carharines during the first week of November 2008. In this picture they only have two coats of white primer on them. They still need a coat of outside semigloss white and the porch area needs staining which will soon be done.

This installation was completed in three working days by Roger Gauvreau, Marcel Blais & Earl Capell including the building of the chimney in November 2008. This installation was installed at the Gauvreau residence at 5 Tudor Gate Pl. in St.Catharines.
